Contact Lenses that reshape your eye while you are asleep

Corneal Refractive Therapy (CRT®) at Buchanan Optometrists is a fitting procedure that temporarily corrects or greatly reduces myopia (nearsightedness). It is a relatively new technology which has been scientifically found to be beneficial.

The rigid gas permeable contact lenses are worn overnight whilst the person is asleep, and removed in the morning, leaving the wearer with corrected, or greatly improved, vision for their waking hours.

These specially-designed contact lenses gently reshape the front surface of the eye (cornea) overnight, and are perfect for patients who want to see clearly during their day, free from any spectacles or contact lenses.

Corneal Refractive Therapy (CRT®) does not change the physiology of the eye like laser surgery so it is completely reversible. It is also a great option for younger myopia patients who are not old enough for LASIK, or whose vision is still changing. As the children’s eyes change, the lenses can also be changed.

Orthokeratology is suitable for myopia (short sightedness). It takes approximately two weeks for complete vision correction but most people notice a dramatic improvement within the first few days. During this two weeks you may need to wear the lenses during the day or be fitted temporarily with soft contact lenses so that you continue life as normal.

To begin Orthokeratology you will need a fully comprehensive eye examination by our optometrist to determine if you are a suitable candidate. This includes a topography “map” of the front surface of the eye, up-to-date spectacle prescription and full eye health check

Once it has been determined that you are a suitable candidate you will be fitted with the appropriate contact lenses and shown how to insert, remove and care for your lenses. You will need to be seen the morning after your first night of Orthokeratology wear, after one week of wear, after two weeks of wear, after one month of wear, after two months of wear, after a year of wear then you are seen annually. Our optometrist will explain this all to you.
